fairly considerable force in a latrine at the Central market. On the same night a small quantity of explosive was thrown into a tea-house through the back window. In no case was there any loss of life.

The confidence of the Chinese is so completely restored that these incidents, which at the commencement of the strike would have caused general panic, now pass unnoticed.

The men employed by General Leung continue to do most useful work and they have been instru- mental in bringing about the arrest of several bad characters. Street searches take place two

or three times weekly, and on each occasion

a number of undesirables are deported to Canton.

The special police have been excused from duty since the 10th August, but they retain their equipment and are available at very short notice, if required.

4. Incidents occur: on the frontier almost daily. The police rowing boat patrol on the Shum Chun river has been twice fired upon recently. On the 13th August seven men were arrested on the Shum Chun bridge in British territory in the circumstances described in the attached report. The men have not yet returned, On the 15th August two rifle shots were fired from a tower in Chinese territory into the Ta Ku Ling Police Station at a range of 500 yards, one shot striking the inner wall of the barrack room, the shooting being applauded by a number of people on the top of the tower.
